Modernist House
Re-modelling & basement pool extension
The host building is a large 5-bedroom dwelling for a growing family in the rural parish of Audley. Dating from circa 1960, the house which features long flat roof profiles and stepping levels across the sloping site, had clear intention of following the modernism movement.
Unfortunately, the passage of time along with some adhoc bolt-on extensions had led to deterioration of the building style, but even so its quirky appearance and elevated setting with an unbelievable view to the West gave this building the potential to see an incredible uplift.
Initially the client had used another designer, however, the approved scheme had failed to capture the client's imagination. B3architectural were brought to the project to turn this around.
The intent was to modernise the building frontage in a simplistic 'Modernist' style using a single clean line for the roof and minimal ornament. The vertical timber slats to the frontage take influence from Mackintosh principles, where a simplistic form combined with depth, texture and shadow create the visual interest.
It was important that the original character and style of this building could be retained, and the new elements created in the backdrop using two clean rooflines which create a 'cathedral-like' 6.6m high new double storey family living space combined with various internal alterations.
A final component of the project will be a sunken Basement Swimming Pool / Gym area with a long linear balcony created overhead.
This project is currently at the planning stage, and we look forward to continuing it later this year.
